Assiniboine Lodge is the first ski lodge in the Canadian Rockies. It was built in 1928 and remains totally off the grid. We stayed in a one bedroom historic log cabin 32km from the nearest road.

Best Bits

This is an absolutely unique location and experience. To be totally provided for - great food, guided hikes, hot sauna, great wine, cozy cabin - allowed us to make the most of a world class location.

We went on dayhikes - both solo and guided. We savored great food, wine and new friends. And being immersed in nature of this magnitude, leaves one with a sense of tranquility.

Worst Bits

This location wont be for everyone. It is remote. There is one shared bathroom and shower for everyone. The cabins have associated outhouses….not the stinky kind. But if you need to go at night be prepared for a 50 yard walk in the dark. Take your headlight.

The cabins do not have hot water. A basin of hot water is dropped off at your door every morning. It’s also not a budget holiday. The helicopter and almost all inclusive nature of the lodge carry a price tag.

Trip Dates and Comments on Timing

August / September — Excellent timing. On the shoulder season as the temperature starts to drop quickly in the fall here.

Arrival Logistics

Drove in our truck from Calgary to the Mount Shark helipad. Took helicopter from there to the lodge.

General Route

Curtis in the Canadian Rockies

Spend several days of time far in the mountains. Disconnected from phones, internet etc. Enjoy great food, wine, hiking and relaxing in nature.

Main Activities

Hiking, Historical visits, Food, Wildlife.

Food and Drink Highlights

All food was provided by the lodge and it was gourmet. So much so that they sell their own cook book. A small but great selection of beer and wine rounded it out the experience. Everything is flown in here by helicopter.

Essential Packing for this Trip

Warm clothes (winter can happen here anytime) and rain gear. Your camera. Your sense of adventure.

What Curtis got up to…

I brought my girlfriend here with the intention of asking her to marry me. This location did not disappoint. After a couple days of hiking through the mountains and meadows, both with a guide and going solo we ended up at a serene lake where I got down on one knee. The rest is history.

When we got back to the lodge we got the opportunity to go watch a mother grizzly bear and her 3 cubs. To spend 45 minutes watching grizzlies (at 50m) do what they do….is also priceless. Between, the location, the food, hospitality, and adventure here…this place is bucket list material.
